Bespoke Furniture & Wardrobes

Furniture made for your room, not a showroom

Bespoke furniture is built to the exact size of your space, rather than chosen from standard sizes. That includes fitted and built-in wardrobes, alcove cupboards and shelving, under-stairs storage, window seats, media walls and storage under sloping ceilings.

It's for homeowners in Exeter and across Devon who want to make better use of a room. That might be a bedroom with no room for a freestanding wardrobe, a loft conversion with low eaves, alcoves beside a chimney breast, or a hallway that needs somewhere for coats and shoes.

People usually want it when storage has run out, after a renovation or loft conversion, or when freestanding furniture leaves gaps, wastes space or doesn't suit the room.

Built-in furniture is fixed to your walls, floors and ceilings, and in most homes those aren't perfectly straight or level. It needs a carpenter to scribe it to the room so there are no gaps and the doors hang true. Done well, it looks like it has always been there.

Why it matters

Why storage that doesn't fit costs you

Freestanding furniture rarely fits the room it's in. It leaves gaps at the sides and top that collect dust, wastes the space in alcoves and eaves, and often doesn't hold what you need. The result is clutter, and rooms that feel smaller than they are.

Poorly fitted built-ins are just as frustrating: visible gaps where the unit meets the wall, doors that don't line up, and shelves that sag because they're too long or too thin for what's on them.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Measuring for flat-pack and discovering the walls and ceiling aren't square.
  • Using shelves that are too long or too thin for the weight they'll carry.
  • Forgetting about skirting, sockets and radiators when planning the layout.
  • Choosing a finish that doesn't suit the room or wears quickly.
  • Leaving the dead space in eaves and under stairs unused.

Our process

How your bespoke furniture & wardrobes job runs.

  1. Step 1

    Site visit

Jake comes out, sees the job in person and talks through what you want, what's possible and anything that could affect the work.

  2. Step 2

    Individual quote

Every job is different, so it's priced individually. Access, location and the layout and contents of your home all play a part, so you get an accurate quote rather than a guess.

  3. Step 3

    Deposit and booking

A deposit secures your booking. The amount depends on the size and scale of the job.

  4. Step 4

    The work

Our small team carries out the work, coordinating any trusted trades needed. Longer jobs use stage payments as the work progresses.

  5. Step 5

    Completion and guarantee

We finish, check the work with you and hand over. Invoices are sent online and paid by bank transfer, and all our workmanship is guaranteed for 12 months.

What you get

The difference it makes.

Every millimetre used

Designed for what you store

Hanging rails, shelves and drawers are planned around what you need to keep, not a standard layout.

Strong and stable

Properly fixed and sized, so shelves don't sag and doors keep hanging straight.

12-month guarantee

Priced individually

Every piece is different, so we price each one individually after seeing the space in person.

Why JCK

Who'll be doing the work.

JCK Carpentry & Building is run by Jake Killen, a City & Guilds Level 3 qualified carpenter with a Diploma in Site Carpentry. Jake started an apprenticeship straight from school, spending three years on loft conversions, and went self-employed as soon as he qualified. He has since worked as a carpenter in Australia, fitted kitchens, built timber frame houses and worked as a groundworker with a house building company, alongside nearly every other trade on site.

That breadth is why your bespoke furniture & wardrobes project is in good hands. Jake understands how carpentry fits with groundworks, bricklaying, plumbing, electrics and plastering, so he can plan the work in the right order and spot problems before they become expensive.

Jake works with a small team of carpenters and a regular, trusted network of plumbers, electricians, plasterers and decorators. He uses the same subcontractors wherever possible, so the people in your home know each other's work and standards. You have one point of contact from the first site visit to the finished job.

Every job is priced individually after we've seen it in person, insured with £2 million public liability cover, and backed by a 12-month workmanship guarantee. We work across Exeter, Exmouth, Dawlish, Cullompton, Tiverton, Crediton, Teignmouth, Silverton and Honiton, Monday to Saturday.

In detail

Bespoke furniture in detail

Here are the pieces we're asked for most, and the materials and methods behind them.

Fitted wardrobes

Floor-to-ceiling wardrobes with hinged or sliding doors, hanging rails, shelving and drawers. They can fill a whole wall, an alcove, or the space beside a chimney breast, and are scribed to the walls and ceiling for a built-in finish.

Eaves and loft storage

Sloping ceilings in loft conversions and upstairs rooms often leave unusable space. Eaves cupboards, drawers and angled wardrobes turn it into storage without taking floor space from the room.

Alcoves, under-stairs and hallways

Alcove cupboards with shelving above, pull-out under-stairs storage, boot and coat storage in hallways, window seats with storage underneath, and media walls for the living room.

Materials and finishes

MDF is popular for painted furniture because it's stable and takes a smooth finish. Birch ply and veneered boards suit a natural look, while solid timber such as oak can be used for tops, shelves and frames. We'll help you choose what suits the room and how you'll use it.

How it's fitted

Carcasses are fixed securely to the structure, then scribed to walls, floors and ceilings. Doors are hung and adjusted to line up, and finishing trim hides any fixings so the piece looks part of the room.

Doors and handles

Hinged doors suit most rooms and give full access to the inside. Sliding doors save space where there's no room for doors to swing open. Handles, knobs or push-to-open fittings change the look completely, so it's worth choosing them with the room in mind.

Internal layout

The inside is planned around what you store: long and short hanging, shelves for folded clothes, drawers, shoe storage and space for bulky items. Getting the layout right is what makes a fitted wardrobe more useful than a freestanding one.

Built as part of a bigger job

If you're having a loft conversion, extension or renovation, planning the furniture at the same time means the wiring, lighting and structure can be arranged around it.
