Exeter

Based in Exeter

JCK Carpentry & Building is based at 16 Bridge Road, Exeter, so the city is where we do much of our work. Whether you're in Heavitree, St Thomas, Pennsylvania, Pinhoe, Alphington, St Leonard's or one of the newer developments on the edge of the city, you're close to home for us.

Exeter's housing is unusually varied for a city of its size. Around the centre and St Leonard's there are Georgian and Regency townhouses and terraces. Heavitree, Mount Pleasant, Newtown and St Thomas are full of Victorian and Edwardian terraces, while Whipton, Beacon Heath and Countess Wear have large areas of post-war housing. On the fringes, estates built over the last twenty years or so are still settling in.

Each type brings its own needs. Victorian terraces are often ready for a rear or side-return extension and a loft conversion to add a bedroom. Post-war semis frequently need a new kitchen, flooring and updated carpentry throughout. Newer homes often want garden rooms, fitted wardrobes and the extra finishing work that developers leave out.

With the university and hospital nearby, many Exeter households are also working from home or need space for growing families. That's why loft conversions, garden offices and fitted storage are some of the most common enquiries we get from Exeter homeowners.

Why JCK

Why choose us in Exeter.

Local knowledge

What Exeter homes commonly need

The age and style of Exeter's housing, and the city's damp South West climate, shape the problems we're asked to fix.

Victorian and Edwardian terraces

Terraces in Heavitree, St Thomas and Mount Pleasant often have uneven floors, walls that are far from square and original timbers that have been altered many times over. New carpentry has to be scribed to the building, and floors usually need securing and levelling before any new flooring goes down.

Georgian and listed properties

Older townhouses around the centre may be listed or in a conservation area, which affects what can be changed. Work on these homes needs care with original features such as sash windows, panelled doors and staircases.

Post-war and 1960s–70s homes

These houses are often structurally sound but have tired kitchens, thin internal doors and dated joinery. They respond well to a full second fix refresh, new flooring and a modern kitchen.

Newer estates

Newer homes on the edge of Exeter can have small rooms and little built-in storage. Fitted wardrobes, garden rooms and loft conversions (where the roof design allows) are common ways to add space. Trussed roofs need an engineer's design before any alteration.

Damp, rain and ventilation

Exeter gets plenty of rain, and older homes with poor ventilation can suffer condensation. Bathrooms, loft rooms and garden rooms need proper ventilation and insulation to stay dry and comfortable.

Our process

How a job in Exeter runs.

  1. Step 1

    Site visit

Jake comes out, sees the job in person and talks through what you want, what's possible and anything that could affect the work.

  2. Step 2

    Individual quote

Every job is different, so it's priced individually. Access, location and the layout and contents of your home all play a part, so you get an accurate quote rather than a guess.

  3. Step 3

    Deposit and booking

A deposit secures your booking. The amount depends on the size and scale of the job.

  4. Step 4

    The work

Our small team carries out the work, coordinating any trusted trades needed. Longer jobs use stage payments as the work progresses.

  5. Step 5

    Completion and guarantee

We finish, check the work with you and hand over. Invoices are sent online and paid by bank transfer, and all our workmanship is guaranteed for 12 months.

Getting started

Starting your Exeter project.

Getting started on a project in Exeter is simple. Call Jake on 07487 872620, email enquiries@jckcarpentryandbuilding.co.uk or fill in the enquiry form. Tell us roughly what you have in mind, whether it's a single job such as new internal doors or a larger project such as an extension or loft conversion.

Jake will then arrange to visit your Exeter home. The site visit is where he sees the job in person, checks access, measures up and talks through what's possible. It's also your chance to ask questions and get a feel for who you'd be working with. Because every home is different, this is how we make sure the price you get is accurate.

After the visit you'll receive an individual quote. If you're happy, a deposit secures your booking, and larger projects are paid in stages as the work progresses. All invoices are sent online and paid by bank transfer, so there's a clear record at every step.

As well as Exeter, we work regularly in Crediton, Exmouth, Silverton, Cullompton and across the rest of our Devon coverage, so if you have family or a second property nearby, we can help there too.
