Bathroom Fitting

A complete bathroom, handled from start to finish

A bathroom install brings together more trades than almost any other room: stripping out, carpentry for floors, stud walls and boxing, plumbing, electrics, plastering or boarding, waterproofing, tiling or panelling, fitting the suite and finishing.

Our bathroom fitting service is for homeowners in Exeter and across Devon who want a complete new bathroom, en-suite or cloakroom, managed as one job. We handle the carpentry ourselves and coordinate our regular, trusted plumbers, electricians, plasterers and decorators.

You usually need a new bathroom when the old one is worn, leaking or dated, when you want a walk-in shower instead of a bath, or when you're adding an en-suite as part of a loft conversion or extension.

Professional fitting matters because bathrooms are about managing water. What you can't see, such as the subfloor, the wall boards, the waterproofing and the pipework, decides whether a bathroom lasts or leaks through the ceiling below.

Why it matters

What a badly fitted bathroom costs

Leaks are the big risk. A shower tray on a floor that flexes, tiles on the wrong board, or missing waterproofing can let water seep into the floor and walls for months before a stain appears on the ceiling below. By then joists, plaster and the ceiling may need repairing as well as the bathroom.

Other common problems include cracked tiles and grout on floors that move, poor ventilation leading to mould, and boxing that can't be opened to reach pipework when something needs servicing.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Tiling over a timber floor that hasn't been stiffened or overboarded.
  • Using ordinary plasterboard in wet areas.
  • Skipping waterproofing around showers and baths.
  • Not planning access to pipework and valves.
  • Booking separate trades without anyone coordinating the order of work.

Our process

How your bathroom fitting job runs.

  1. Step 1

    Site visit

Jake comes out, sees the job in person and talks through what you want, what's possible and anything that could affect the work.

  2. Step 2

    Individual quote

Every job is different, so it's priced individually. Access, location and the layout and contents of your home all play a part, so you get an accurate quote rather than a guess.

  3. Step 3

    Deposit and booking

A deposit secures your booking. The amount depends on the size and scale of the job.

  4. Step 4

    The work

Our small team carries out the work, coordinating any trusted trades needed. Longer jobs use stage payments as the work progresses.

  5. Step 5

    Completion and guarantee

We finish, check the work with you and hand over. Invoices are sent online and paid by bank transfer, and all our workmanship is guaranteed for 12 months.

Why JCK

Who'll be doing the work.

JCK Carpentry & Building is run by Jake Killen, a City & Guilds Level 3 qualified carpenter with a Diploma in Site Carpentry. Jake started an apprenticeship straight from school, spending three years on loft conversions, and went self-employed as soon as he qualified. He has since worked as a carpenter in Australia, fitted kitchens, built timber frame houses and worked as a groundworker with a house building company, alongside nearly every other trade on site.

That breadth is why your bathroom fitting project is in good hands. Jake understands how carpentry fits with groundworks, bricklaying, plumbing, electrics and plastering, so he can plan the work in the right order and spot problems before they become expensive.

Jake works with a small team of carpenters and a regular, trusted network of plumbers, electricians, plasterers and decorators. He uses the same subcontractors wherever possible, so the people in your home know each other's work and standards. You have one point of contact from the first site visit to the finished job.

Every job is priced individually after we've seen it in person, insured with £2 million public liability cover, and backed by a 12-month workmanship guarantee. We work across Exeter, Exmouth, Dawlish, Cullompton, Tiverton, Crediton, Teignmouth, Silverton and Honiton, Monday to Saturday.

In detail

Bathroom installation in detail

Here's what goes into a complete bathroom install, and the options worth considering.

Full bathrooms, en-suites and cloakrooms

We fit main bathrooms, en-suites and downstairs cloakrooms. En-suites are often part of a loft conversion or extension, where the room is built and fitted by the same team.

Floors and walls

Timber floors are stiffened and overboarded where needed so tiles don't crack. In wet areas, walls are built or lined with moisture-resistant or cement-based boards, and waterproofing is applied around showers and baths before tiling.

Showers, baths and wet rooms

Options include baths with showers over, separate shower enclosures, walk-in showers and fully tanked wet rooms. Each needs a different approach to floor falls, drainage and waterproofing.

Plumbing, electrics and ventilation

Our trusted plumbers and electricians handle pipework, waste, heating, lighting and extraction. Good ventilation matters in every bathroom to reduce condensation and mould.

Finishing

Tiling or waterproof wall panels, bath panels and boxing, fitting the suite and brassware, sealing, and decorating. Boxing is built with access panels so pipework can be reached if it ever needs attention.

Planning the layout

Moving the toilet, shower or bath changes the pipework and waste runs, and the position of the soil pipe often decides what's possible. We look at this at the site visit so the layout you want is one that works.

Storage and accessories

Vanity units, wall cabinets, recessed shelving and boxing designed as storage make a bathroom easier to live with. As carpenters, we can build storage into the room rather than just hanging a cabinet.

Tiles, panels and finishes

Tiles give endless choice but need a solid, well-prepared surface. Waterproof wall panels are quicker to fit and have fewer joints to clean. Either can work well when the preparation underneath is right.
